Surréalisme

Max Ernst, « L'ange du foyer (Le triomphe du surréalisme) », 1937 © Adagp, Paris. Vincent Everarts Photographie

From 04 September 2024 to 13 January 2025 at the Centre Pompidou

‘Combining paintings, drawings, films, photographs and literary documents, the exhibition presents the works of the movement's emblematic artists (Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Giorgio de Chirico, Max Ernst, Joan Miró) as well as those of the female Surrealists (including Leonora Carrington, Ithell Colquhoun and Dora Maar).
The exhibition is both chronological and thematic, with 14 chapters evoking the literary figures who inspired the movement (Lautréamont, Lewis Carroll, Sade, etc.) and the poetic principles that structured its imagination (the artist as medium, the dream, the philosopher's stone, the forest, etc.).
At the heart of the exhibition is a central ‘drum’ housing the original manuscript of the Manifesto, on exceptional loan from the Bibliothèque nationale de France. A multimedia projection accompanies the discovery of this unique document, shedding light on its genesis and meaning.’ - centrepompidou.fr

Malcolm de CHAZAL

Photo : hallesaintpierre.org

From 11 September 2024 to 19 January 2025 at Les Halles Saint-Pierre

‘Acknowledged as one of the most important Mauritian artists of the twentieth century, Malcolm de Chazal was the emblematic face of Mauritius widely disseminated in painting. But he was also its poet of all poets, acclaimed by major post-war literary and artistic figures such as André Breton, George Bataille, Jean Paulhan and Francis Ponge. As for Léopold Sedar Senghor, he immediately recognised the uniqueness and singularity of his work: ‘If Chazal's poetry, which is a geyser of sap, a torrent of lava, a bush of metaphors, seems difficult, it is so confusing (...) his painting gives the impression of ease. Like the paintings of traditional civilisations’.
Planning an exhibition on Malcolm de Chazal today also means, in this period of uncertainty, offering the utopian wonder and enchantment of the Chazalian universe. It also means giving the poet's and painter's art, and its astonishing ecological and spiritual dimensions, their full power to recharge our batteries. - hallesaintpierre.org

From 24 September 2024 to 12 January 2025 at the Musée d'Orsay

‘The Norwegian painter Harriet Backer was the most famous female painter in her country at the end of the nineteenth century, but she was little known outside her own country. Famous for her use of rich, luminous colours, she achieved a highly personal synthesis of interior scenes and plein-air painting. She drew her inspiration from both the realist movement and the innovations of Impressionism, using a free touch and a great interest in variations in light. She is also known for her sensitive portraits of the rural world and her interest in church interiors’. - musee-orsay.fr

Rodin / Bourdelle. Corps à corps

Photo : bourdelle.paris.fr

From 2 October 2024 to 2 February 2025 at the Musée Bourdelle

‘Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929) admired Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), twenty years his senior. He worked for fifteen years as a practitioner, carving marbles for Rodin. The master saw in this willingly unruly heir a
a ‘pathfinder for the future’.
Parallel and often superimposed, their careers are certainly worthy of a major exhibition. Through more than 160 works, including 96 sculptures, 38 drawings, 3 paintings and 26 photographs, the confrontation reveals, with unprecedented ambition and scope, the fraternities and reciprocities as well as the divergences and antagonisms of two creators, of two plastic universes, bearers of the major issues of modernity.’ - bourdelle.paris.fr

L'intime, de la chambre aux réseaux sociaux

Edgar Degas, Femme assise sur le bord d’une baignoire et s’épongeant le cou, 1880-1895 (© RMN-Grand Palais (Musée d’Orsay) / Hervé Lewandowski)

From 15 October 2024 to 30 March 2025 at the MAD Musée des Arts Décoratifs

‘From 15 October 2024 to 30 March 2025, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs is offering a fascinating journey to the heart of our secret gardens through a history of intimacy from the 18th century to the present day. 470 works, including paintings and photographs, as well as decorative art, everyday objects and design objects, reveal how intimacy has evolved. From the bedroom as seen by Henri Cartier-Bresson or Nan Goldin, from the wrought-iron beds of the nineteenth century to the enclosed bed of the Bouroullec brothers, from the pierced chair to the urinal for women, from dry toilet objects to the bathroom, from aristocratic beauty to mass consumption, from licentious books to sex toys, from the walkman to social networks and influence, via surveillance and protection tools, the exhibition shows how intimacy has been imposed and then profoundly modified. The boundaries between private and public have become increasingly blurred and porous, giving rise to much debate. - madparis.fr

Figures du Fou

Photo : louvre.fr

From 16 October 2024 to 3 February 2025 at the Musée du Louvre

‘Although studied by social and cultural historians, the fascinating figure of the madman, who was part of the visual culture of people in the Middle Ages, has rarely been studied from the point of view of art history. Yet between the 13th and mid-16th centuries, the notion of madness inspired and stimulated artistic creation in both literature and the visual arts.
This ambitious and stimulating exhibition aims to explore the typically medieval figure of the madman through his representations. It will bring together over 300 works in a chronological and thematic display, including sculptures, objets d'art (ivories, caskets, small bronzes), medals, illuminations, drawings, engravings, panel paintings and tapestries. - louvre.fr
